Something Real (Fortunate Book 2)

Something Real - Released May 31st 2015

Jemma Peeters knows exactly what she wants out of life, right down to the very last detail. She has it all planned out – the perfect career, the perfect husband, the perfect family. It's going to be. . .well, perfect. She knows how she wants things, and even how her perfect man will be.

Reid Padin is NOT it. He's dangerously sexy and annoyingly arrogant. He smokes too much, drinks too much and drives his stupid motorcycle way too fast. He curses like a sailor and goes through so many women he can't even remember their names. He's wrong for her in every way.

So why can't she stay away from him?

When Jemma accidentally stumbles into the tattoo shop where Reid works, an unlikely friendship is born. He'll give her freedom, he'll make her feel things she's never felt before, he'll show her that she's just as flawed as anyone else. Soon, lines are crossed, boundaries are obliterated and Jemma learns that a person's imperfections are kind of what makes them perfect.

He wants her, she wants him, and only her stubbornness will stand in their way.

Excerpt from Chapter 5

We lay together in silence for a while, the movie we were supposed to catch conveniently forgotten. We can do this for hours, just be quiet and peaceful and not have to say anything at all. I've never had that with anyone before.
“Your heart is beating really fast. I can feel it beneath my cheek.” My voice, though quiet, seems absurdly loud and I immediately wish I hadn't said it. It feels a lot like one of those lines we just don't cross.
“Shut it,” he drawls, wrapping his long fingers around my small wrist to feel my pulse. “So's yours.”
Even though we haven't really said much at all, this is still the closest we've ever come to talking about or feelings for each other, the romantic ones we pretend not to have.
When I tilt my head up to see his face, I find he's already looking down at me. Gone is his usual smirk, his playfulness, his carefree nonchalance. His eyes are hooded as he watches me, filled with want and lust and suddenly I'm finding it hard to breathe. I'm surrounded by him, totally and completely. His heat, his very presence, even his smell. Spicy cologne and smoke and the faint hint of antiseptic from working in the tattoo shop and Twinkies, because he found my secret stash earlier and ate them all. I'm surrounded by him and I like it. I adore it, way more than a friend should. No other friend has ever made me feel the way Reid does. No other guy has made me feel the way he does, not a single one of my past boyfriends.
“Jemma,” he murmurs desperately, pressing his forehead against mine. He drops my hand and cups the side of my head. His hand is so large that the bottom of his palm touches my chin and his fingers still thread through my hair.
Reid's breath dances over my lips, warm and tempting and sinful. All I want is to let go, to let him in. Our lips brush, just the tiniest of secret whispers.

Something Real Playlist

As I usually do, I created a playlist for Something Real as I was writing it. Songs that inspired me as I wrote or songs that I found really fit the story or the characters well. I included it at the end of the story, but here's a more detailed version in case any of you guys were curious as to why I picked those songs -

Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepson
This one is Jemma's song. Not for the words, but just because I like the sound. It's bouncy and light and fun – which is all Jemma.

You're Gonna Go Far, Kid by The Offspring
This one is Reid's sound. Once again not for the words, but I just like the sound of the song in general. It's kind of punkish (is that even a word?) and bad ass. Totally Reid

What Would Happen by Meredith Brooks
What would happen if we kissed? I mean, no explanation needed here really.

We by Joy Williams
I like this song for both Reid and Jemma. I think it fits them pretty well.

Ghost by Sir Sly
This one I mentioned in the story twice; once when Jemma and Reid almost kissed, and again at the bar when dancing. I just liked the sound of this song – it's slowish and sexy and so it fit the scenes well

Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran
Even though I didn't write any scenes from Reid's POV (though who knows in the future), I thought that this song kind of fit perfectly with how he would have been feeling after their fight and they stopped talking.

Show Me by Evans Blue
Another one for Reid after Jemma rejected him.

Big Girls Cry by Sia
Jemma and her Twinkies.

What Scares You Most by Manic Bloom
This is the song for Jemma as she changes and grows as a person. Not her usual style, but I still think it kind of fit the story

Pour Some Sugar On Me by Def Leppard
Naughty naughty sexy times with Jemma and Reid ;)

Sons & Daughters by Allman Brown Ft. Liz Lawrence
Jemma and Reid are finally together

Somebody Like You by Keith Urban
The end. I just like this song – it's so cheery!

Inspiration for Something Real

I wasn't actually planning on doing a story for Jemma, but I really liked the idea of having somebody else describe a scene about Blair and Silver, just a small moment in time. That was the bar scene, where Jemma is sitting with Reid and Silver walks in and he and Blair embrace. Originally it just would have been a little something extra to post on my website, and I kind of liked the idea of Jemma sitting with a guy who was her opposite, and maybe realizing that differences aren't so bad. It snowballed from there, until Jemma ended up with her own little story.
